Evidently, the only way to downgrade from a firmware upgrade on many (if not all) Macs is to replace the logic board. Click Download, and it automatically downloads the software package on your system.
You will see a display showing the version number of the latest source release and a download button, as in the image below. Open a browser and navigate to Git’s official website.
The only instance that I have heard of where software can harm hardware on a Mac is when upgrading the firmware. The easiest way to set up Git is to use the Git installer for Mac. Their website states support for 2011 iMacs (iMac12,x), however the website also recommends upgrading to a Metal GPU.
